About this game
About the 2048 number puzzle
2048 is a number-merging puzzle played on a 4 × 4 board. Choose a direction to slide all tiles together. Adjacent tiles with the same value can combine into a larger number. Reach a 2048 tile while keeping enough space to make your next move.
The challenge is managing the whole board. A move can create a useful merge while shifting other tiles out of place, and each valid move introduces a new 2 or 4. This browser version lets you continue beyond the target and work toward larger tiles.
Features in this version
Moves and scoring
A merge adds the value of its new tile to your score: two 8s becoming 16 earn 16 points. A move that leaves the board unchanged does not spawn a tile or count as a valid move.
Keyboard and touch
Use arrow keys or WASD on a computer, swipe on the board on a phone, or tap the direction buttons. Every control uses the same four directions.
Undo and saved progress
Undo the most recent valid move once. Undo history ends on refresh, while the board and best score save in this browser. Starting a new game resets the board.
Getting started
- Choose a corner for your largest tile and keep other large values nearby so it is less likely to drift into the center.
- Check the entire row or column before moving. Every tile slides, not just the two you want to merge.
- Keep empty cells available instead of pursuing a merge that blocks the next move. Less space usually means fewer useful choices.
Frequently asked questions
Does reaching 2048 end the game?
Reaching the target displays a win message. Choose Keep playing to retain your board and merge toward larger numbers.
Why did a direction key not add a new tile?
A new 2 or 4 appears only when a move slides or merges tiles. If the board cannot change in that direction, your score and move count stay the same.
Can I continue after refreshing?
The board and score save locally and can be restored on refresh. Saves belong to this browser and do not sync across devices. Clearing browser data can remove progress.
