About the Snake arcade game

Snake combines continuous movement with route planning. Your snake keeps moving in its current direction; steer it toward food without hitting a wall or its own body. As it grows, the open space becomes smaller and each turn needs more care.

This version uses a 20 × 20 board. Every bite adds one cell to the snake and earns 10 points. Start slowly to learn the controls, or choose a faster pace to test your timing. Best scores are recorded separately for each speed, and filling the board wins the game.

Features in this version

Three speeds

Choose Slow, Normal or Fast before starting a new game. Each changes the movement pace and keeps its own best score so you can compare runs at the same speed.

Direction controls

Use arrow keys or WASD, swipe on the board, or tap the direction buttons. Immediate reversal is ignored; change your route with a sequence of turns instead.

Pause and resume

Pause manually or let the game pause when you leave the window. A refreshed save stays paused until you resume, preventing unexpected movement while the page loads.

Getting started

  1. Look ahead around the next food cell and turn before you reach a wall rather than waiting until the last moment.
  2. As the snake grows, favor wide, connected routes. Repeated tight turns can trap you inside your own body.
  3. Check your exit before chasing food. A longer route can give the tail time to move and leave more room for the next turn.

Frequently asked questions

Can the snake wrap around the board?

This version does not wrap around. Hitting any edge ends the run, so turn before the head reaches a wall.

Why is a reverse direction ignored?

An immediate reversal would send the head into the next body segment. Use a sequence of turns to change direction instead.

Does the game keep moving in another window?

Leaving the window or sending the page into the background pauses play. Resume manually when you return. Refreshed saves also stay paused and do not sync across browsers or devices.
